Are you tired of waiting?

Are you at a point where you are tired of waiting for life to happen? You’ve raised your kids, worked a job and career, or several, and have been busy, busy doing…life. But you’ve always had dreams that someday you would travel; or someday you would be free from the pressures and constant work and enjoy life; or someday you would stop waiting to do what you’ve always wanted to do, but just never had the time, money, energy, experience, or whatever.

Well, that was my husband and me. But we finally made the decision to stop waiting and start living and we are making our someday, today. Right now! No more waiting for the perfect time, or the perfect plan or even the perfect amount of money. Life is too short and there is too much to experience, to see, to do, to eat, to drink and so many places to travel and people to meet to be waiting anymore.

Who are these Gypsies?

So who are these Gypsies anyway? We are Eric and Kathleen Favier, a mature, married couple, both over 50 and on our ‘second wind’ in life, relearning and rediscovering a new way to live. Like many people our age, we’ve been through much throughout our lives but have always dreamed of the time when kids, work, house, life, etc would become easier so we could travel and enjoy life, always waiting for the ‘right time’. Eric was in the food and beverage industry for 40+ years, all his career, and owned a restaurant for 22 of those years. His life was the restaurant and he had very little time to really slow down and enjoy life.

I was a homemaker and mom, raising two boys and creating a home for my family for most of my adult life. But I knew there was more to life than just home and kids. There was a whole world out there of places, people and cultures to experience and learn. But I was always waiting…waiting to have those experiences, waiting for the right time, waiting for life to ‘slow down’…

Then the major life changing event happens. For me, it was an unexpected divorce. After the trauma and shock subsided, I had to face the ‘now what?’ feeling. I was over 50 and starting life all over again. Scary, with lots of tears, fears and anxiety, but also exciting. I get to make a new life on my own. I found a job working at a winery, something I’d never done before. Over the next several years, I’d be experiencing many of those ‘never done before’ moments. 😉

One of those moments literally changed my life and the direction (and location) of where I was going. Back in April, 2015, I was on a solo cross country trip from California to live near my kids in Pennsylvania. I was ready for a change. While on the trip, traveling through Colorado, I stopped to check out the wineries in Palisade. Who knew there was wine in Colorado? But that stop for some local wine changed the course of my life.

At the local French winery, Maison la Belle Vie, I serendipitously met Eric, a peach farmer, who happened to be visiting his friend, John, the winery owner. They’re both French, by the way. We talked about wine, dogs, and our former spouses, never thinking it would turn into a long term relationship. (Both of us had recently gone through divorces and weren’t really looking for anyone at the time)

But life has a funny way of happening when you least expect it. Eric felt the ‘vibe’ right away. It took me a little longer, but after texting, emailing and calling each other for 15 months as ‘penpals’, we finally got together as a couple. So unexpected after the major life event, but so beautiful too. I moved to Palisade, Colorado in July, 2016 and we recently got married in May, 2018. As Eric likes to say, “You never know in life”.

“You never know in life.”

Eric Favier

Now the adventure really begins. It’s been such a whirlwind of experiences, travel, love found, new joys, new businesses and a whole new life. We are on our ‘second wind’ and want to stop waiting anymore and enjoy life now.

We are both over 50 and have gone through much in our lives. And we both want to stop waiting for ‘someday’; someday we’ll have the time…someday we’ll have the money…someday the kids will be gone…someday we’ll have more vacation….someday we’ll…. someday….someday….someday. Well, “Someday…..is today”.

We are choosing to live life now and to stop waiting for the right time or the right amount of money. We both want and love to travel; meet people; discover new places and experiences; drink and appreciate wine; discover and create wonderful food; appreciate art in many places as well as create art (Eric with sculpture and Kathleen with photography). Basically, we want to stop waiting and enjoy life now.

So we became Gypsies After 50 to start our ‘someday’ adventure now. Life is not guaranteed tomorrow or next week. Time is precious and we want to spend it discovering the next adventure with each other and our family and friends.
