Marathon Key, FL – Photo Galleries of our Month Stay

We made it to the Keys! After experiencing the Everglades and anchoring in gorgeous locations, we arrived in Marathon Key by mid January. We’ve been staying at the Safe Harbor Marathon Marina, which is located on the southeast end of the key near Boot Key Harbor. It hasn’t been all fun and games, as we’ve been working on boat projects and work projects…and simply living life with all the mundane activities like cleaning, cooking and shopping. But we’ve definitely taken time to enjoy the area and the water. As you know, I love taking pictures. So rather than a lot of words, I thought I’d take you through our time in Marathon through photos. So check out each different Marathon gallery and enjoy experiencing our month in the Marathon marina.

Biking in Marathon

We love to use our electric bikes to do errands and shopping, but they are also great to explore places and just get outside and enjoy the weather. We’ve used them quite a lot since being in Marathon. And we can bring Moose along for the ride too in his trailer.

One of our favorite rides is from the marina on to the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The views are great and there’s designated bike paths making it safer and more enjoyable. And you can’t beat looking out at the turquoise blue water!

When going shopping, which is a necessary task, we have to go along the Overseas Highway, which is basically the only main road through town and the Keyes. And there’s a lot of traffic, but at least there is a bike path on most of the road.

This first Marathon gallery are some photos of our biking trips and some of the sites along the way. You’ll need to click on the arrow button to cycle through all of the photos. And you can even click on the photo to see the full sized photo. Enjoy!

We got our Kayaks in the water!

And now the kayaks… we bought these foldable kayak/paddleboards awhile ago and just hadn’t had a chance to use them. But I was determined to get them off the boat and into the water. And I’m so glad we finally did! It is so much fun and very relaxing as well. And you get such a different view of the water…even different than being on our boat. They are called Origami Paddlers. We ordered them as a kickstarter and got lucky and received them. They are great and take up much less room than a standard kayak. However, at this point, I think the company is restructuring and I don’t know if they can be ordered anymore. (Sorry if you were hoping to get one of your own…)

But we’ve had several, albeit short, trips along Boot Key Harbor, Sister Creek and into little canals, experiencing sites from the water and enjoying the quiet of simply paddling. We are still learning the simplest way to get on and off the kayaks from the boat. We first have to get them in the water off the bow. Then we float them to the swim platform and wiggle our way onto them. It works but it’s not always pretty…but so far we’ve managed to stay dry…for the most part. No complete dunking into the water. Yay! Check out the next Marathon gallery and remember to click the arrow and click on individual photos to see the full size. 🙂

Sombrero Beach and Molasses Key…Some days of fun-in-the-sun!

Although we do work and do daily life more than play everyday, we try to get out and explore when we can. And visiting the beach and cruising to another key was definitely on our list. We actually went to Sombrero Beach twice, one by bike and once by dinghy ride.

Besides work and regular stuff, weather can make it hard to take the boat out. But we finally had an open weather window to discover another little key. We first took our boat over to Sombrero Light Key which is a point a couple miles offshore where there is good snorkling. Unfortunately, the waves were 2+feet, so not fun to be floating around.

So instead, we headed to Molasses Key and so glad we did. What a sweet spot! Only an hour cruise from our slip at Marathon Marina and the water was crystal clear. Moose even went swimming. We anchored out and had lunch, then took a dinghy ride to the little key. It was like a lost island somewhere. There were a couple day trippers hanging out, but it was still very quiet.

Two more Marathon galleries – First gallery is Sombrero Beach. Second is Molasses Key. Enjoy the pics!

Friends, sunsets and food…

The best part of boating is really the people. We’ve already made friends with other boaters and meet up with them along the way. Boaters are just the nicest, most generous, people! We also had some great friends from Tallahassee join us for a few days. It was awesome to hang out and explore with Fran and Phil.

And no Marathon gallery from the Keys would be complete without some sunset shots…

Marathon has been an amazing place to stay for a whole month. We have loved the weather, the breezes, the water and just being able to stay an extended time in one place. And even though we worked while here, being able to get out and explore by bike, kayak or boat for even a short time has been so much fun. But there is so much more to discover in Marathon and the rest of the Keyes, so hopefully we can come back again someday.

One correction though, we were actually only in Marathon for 3 weeks, (though we planned to stay the whole month) as we did take the boat to Key West for a week to meet another friend and explore all that is Key West. So stay tuned for my next post on our adventures and favorite sites in Key West.

Till then, keep making your someday, today and thanks for your comments and shares.

Noticed you haven’t posted in a while. Hope everything is going well. Looks like you all are having lots of fun and adventure. We are still working on our boat, Knot Home. We took the boat out in the Gulf and tried to anchor at Dog island but our windlass didn’t work. We are replacing the windlass and waiting on the vendor to ship it. We are preparing to change the boat name. We really liked the lettering on your boat. Did you have the lettering locally done or online? Looking forward to a Key West trip hopefully late in the year.
